Okay – I teased a few posts ago that things were going on with Jetsam.  I haven’t had a chance to post about what those things are…partly because of being busy, but also because I don’t like to talk about things when I don’t have a pretty good idea of what’s going on.  In this case, I still do not have the whole story.  But that begs the question – do I ever have the “whole” story when Jetsam is concerned?

So you know about the bed bug issue (ick!).  Still trying to make sure the house isn’t over-run with the little buggers, but so far, it looks like we may have caught it early.  Still not out of the woods, but we’ve got a plan in place and we’re doing the best we can to get rid of them.

That was the first weekend of June.  That’s when we also found out that Jetsam had lost her first job at Wal-Mart (more accurately, fired) and would soon be without her second job as a school lunch lady when school let out for the summer by the second weekend in June.

I, incorrectly by the way, predicted that she wouldn’t be moving soon, simply because her usual pattern had her waiting for several months until the landlord threatened to evict her.  Instead, we were surprised by the third weekend to receive the news that she had already moved – into an apartment with one of her younger sisters.  Now – I realize that no one has asked, but it might be a good idea to give you an idea of Jetsam’s family tree, sibling wise:

Oldest – Jetsam (late 30’s, almost 40)

Then sister #1 (in her mid 30’s) – currently separated and possibly divorcing, with 2 kids under the age of 10, just moved back to the area after 10+ years and is the sibling Jetsam just moved in with.

Brother #1 (in his early 30’s) – married with 1 kid around 2 years old, lives in the area, but refuses to allow Jetsam to move in with them.

Sister #2 (in her late 20’s) – married, with stepdaughter and 2 sons under the age of 10, lives in the area, has allowed Jetsam to move in with them before, but the welcome mat is no longer welcoming.

Sister #3 (in her early 20’s) – engaged(?), with 1 infant, basically lives outside of the country.

Brother #2 (I’m not sure if he’s 20 yet – may still have another year or two) – single, but couch surfing in various family members living rooms.

So – there’s the list of Jetsam’s siblings.  Now that we have those descriptions out of the way, let’s focus on Jetsam moving in with Sister #1.  Two bedroom apartment – 2 moms and 3 kids under the age of 10, with an additional 3 teenagers every other weekend – or as often as the adults say it is okay for them to come over.  Oh…and did I mention that the apartment is in a different town from where she was living by over 20 miles?  Also, she’s now the same distance away from the school district where she was working and where the kids insist she still has a job waiting for her as a cafeteria worker when the new school year begins in August.

This new arrangement has been in place less than 2 weeks and we’re already getting grumbling from Rowdy because we’re trying to be the voice of reason.  He wants to spend the summer over there and we’re mean for thinking it might not be a good idea right now.  Their mom has no job – does she have the money to feed 3 extra mouths right now?  Answer – she gets food stamps, so it’s fine!  They’re in an apartment – is there really room for three extra teenagers for an extended period of time?  Answer – they have air mattresses to sleep on, it’s fine!

When I arrived home last night, Monkey and Rowdy were each on a phone and talking to Jetsam.  I over-heard comments about how great it will be if she gets a job in the same school district that we attend.  So….does that mean the original school district job is now kaput as well?  It sounds like it to me, but I will not dare to make a comment about it for now.

Then the kids shared the best news of all!  Jetsam has a new job!  She’s working at Burger King.

Um….I mean…..YAY!!!!

I’m a horrible person.  I commented to Hun (well away from the kids’ hearing – we were in the car, alone), that I would feel like a failure if I was working at Burger King at almost 40 years old and I didn’t either own the building or was a district manager in some form or fashion.  Go ahead and crucify me, but that’s how I feel.  I know, I know, people do what they have to do when they have to and all that jazz….but really?

Hun spoke with Jetsam last night and brought up all of our concerns about the kids staying with her for an extended visit.  They were supposed to be with her next week for the 4th of July holiday.  Based on summer school schedules, color guard rehearsals, and retaking failed state testing, it’s the only week where the kids have NOTHING going on.  Her response was she appreciated us asking about her being able to handle the extra kids because she just doesn’t know what’s going to happen next.

So now, the plan is to wait to see what her new work schedule will be before we make plans for the summer visitation.
